Renovation staircases, railing and balusters.

 

Stairs are an obligatory detail in the arrangement of a private house with several floors, a two-level apartment. They are made from different materials, wood is especially valued for its environmental friendliness, beautiful natural texture, and color. But without periodic minor repairs, a wooden march will not last long. When the coating wears out, it needs to be renewed, since the coating layer increase the resistance of the surface to water and microorganisms. When drying out, defects in the main elements, restoration is needed, complete or partial.

 

The main elements of the stairs

 

• Bearing beams on which the rest of the elements are attached. Inclined bases - stringers, bowstrings; vertical - pillars (in spiral staircases). The integrity and strength of the structure depends on their strength. There are frameless models in which metal bolts (bolts, pins) serve as the supporting part.

• Steps - the plane on which the foot is placed. It consists of 2 parts - tread (horizontal part) and riser (vertical part that determines the height of the step).

• Railing - a fence along the perimeter of the march, consisting of vertical supports (balusters, support pillars or pedestals), a handrail. Serves as a support when lifting, protects against accidental falls, completes the design of the stairs.

Repair features

 

A wooden staircase needs to be repaired when:

 

• the coating has peeled or worn off;

• a creak appeared;

• one or more elements are broken;

• the construction, balusters, handrails loosened.

With a coating, everything is simple - painting will give the wooden staircase its original appearance. The surface is cleaned of old paint, cracks, chips are puttied, irregularities are removed with a fine abrasive. An antiseptic, protective impregnations are applied to the sanded wood, varnished / painted / oiled. The choice of the type of coating is influenced by the type of wood, the operating conditions of the stairs (humidity level, temperature, load). If the varnish coating does not help to hide the defects, sheathe the structure with a laminate, carpet or other finish. Chips, scratches, cracks in the tree occur due to violation of the drying technology of wooden blanks, mechanical damage. Small defects are eliminated with the help of puttying, grinding, into large cracks, a wooden insert is glued to the areas with flying knots, the surface is cleaned, painted in the tone of the main color. Carefully inspect the stairs for hidden cracks. If there are any, they can be repaired with epoxy glue or a metal screed can be placed on the inside of the element, securing it with self-tapping screws.
